Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004 - 3:29 p.m. Shut the Hell Up Already!!!
OK, I don't usually use this forum
as a rant outlet, but there are just some things that are really starting to
piss me off. 1.
Massachusetts and the Gay Marriage Debate. Is homosexuality so
perverse, so debase and so morally reprehensible that the "Christian" Right
feels that above all other "morality" issues, that this deserves a blatant and
legal justification for their bigotry and discrimination in the form of a
Constitutional Amendment to the Massachusetts State Constitution? I
thought Constitutions were meant to establish governmental structure, protect
individuals and outline how individuals can protect themselves from their
governments and not single out ONE specific group to RABIDLY discriminate
against. Will allowing gay couples to marry, thereby granting them the
same rights to beneficiary claims from insurance, coverages for health care, and
other rights and benefits reserved only for married couples really cause the
decay and destruction of the "traditional" family and erode the sanctity of
marriage? HA HA HA HA HA!!! OMG! I KNEW I would never be able
to type that and keep a straight face. Oh, I'm sorry, so the centuries of
blatant and perverse adultery in this country and in every other country in the
world, through the ages have done absolutely NOTHING to erode the sanctity of
marriage? The last time I checked the Ten Commandments, "Thou Shalt Not
Commit Adultery" was on there, whereas "Thou Shalt Not Commit Homosexuality" is
nowhere NEAR to being a major concern. If the self-righteous,
Holier-Than-Thou, I know what's best for you, religious, Christian, moral and
uber - conservative right are so concerned with these issues surrounding
marriage based in religious and moral principal, then where is all of the
cheating spouse legislation denying the cheaters these same rights? Oh,
wait a second, they would be discriminating against straight people and calling
attention to a problem they would rather ignore and blame on someone else!!
We can't do that! With all of the issues facing families these days, I
think they could better focus their energies on ways to help strengthen
families, such as, oh, I dunno, providing affordable health insurance, or
increasing unemployment benefits, or creating jobs, ANYTHING other than an issue
to divert attention away from the mess our country is in right now.
I find their actions morally reprehensible and frankly I am embarrassed that
something like this is actually going on in our country right now. Its
hatred and bigotry, pure and simple. It disgusts me. 2. Janet's
Boob. Why, WHY are we wasting GOVERNMENTAL resources debating
this? WHY!!! My big question here though is actually, why is a
woman's breast considered obscene? Why? I cannot find one person who
can answer me this question. All I get is, "it just is." Chalk it up
to double standards in a male dominated society. It is perfectly
acceptable for a man to go shirtless and bare assed on network TV, talk about
erections lasting for 4 hours in the same program, have a horse fart in a
woman's face, have a dog leap up and bite a man in the crotch, which is
all PERFECTLY OK, but one split second glimpse of a woman's breast is considered
SOOOOOOOOO obscene and pornographic that there are fines flying everywhere, the
congress is involved, investigative agencies looking into it, people losing
their jobs over it, and people suing out the wazoo over it. Is this REALLY
what we need to be focusing all of our attention and resources on? The
obscenity of a BREAST! A WOMAN'S BREAST!! Personally, the offense to
me is all of the backlash. Its no wonder that young girls in this country
grow up feeling worthless, when they are being bombarded with all the hoopla
surrounding this incident. I suppose if I were a teenager and heard
everyday how obscene my body was based on my gender then I too might lapse into
an eating disorder and be ashamed of how I look, have low self esteem and feel
like my life is worth nothing. I have recently read of a woman who was
arrested for breastfeeding. Maybe if everyone just SHUT UP and stopped
talking about it then maybe they would realize its not that big of a deal and
the freaking world is not going to hell in a hand basket over it, our country is
not falling apart at the seams over it, and that gee, maybe women's' bodies
AREN'T indecent pieces of filth. 3. The
Passion. If I hear one more time that this movie promotes
anti-Semitism I am going to fucking rip my hair out. I am so sick of
groups, ANY group for that matter, being so self absorbed and so self
righteous, taking an innocuous thing and twisting and bastardizing it into some
sort of attack against them for promotional purposes. What are we supposed
to do, pretend that nothing took place 2,000 years ago? And that's it,
isn't it? It was TWO FREAKING THOUSAND years ago!!!! The people then
are not the same people of today! Are we supposed to cater to this and
deny and rewrite history for a few who think a portrayal of ancient ancestors
and their customs and laws is going to have adverse effects on those of today,
or because the history of 2000 years ago isn't PC? Is Mel Gibson, as an
artist, supposed to rework his piece because it MIGHT not sit right with a few?
Get over it people! It happened. Its documented. It wasn't
pretty and it had a seriously profound effect on the course of history.
What makes me even angrier is people who denounce films when they have not even
seen them. Take for instance "The Last Temptation of Christ". An
excellent film that sucks the breath right out of you. If you denounce
this movie because you think its obscene, or heretical, and if you have seen it,
you have every right to feel the way you do. If you have not, you are
doing yourself a disservice by lashing out against it. I have not seen "The Passion" but
intend to and will form my own judgment. That is all and I am stepping off
of my soapbox now. Song virus du jour:
"Somewhere Beyond the Sea" ~ Bobby Darin |
