Monday, Jun. 26, 2006 - 7:46 a.m. God Hates Science
At what point does a seemingly normal,
rational, well adjusted person suddenly reject all societal norms regarding
science and accumulated knowledge, observation, proven fact, accepted theory,
collected data, working hypotheses, and scientific methods in general, declares
them all "junk science" which "liberal science text books have
been feeding and lying to children for all these years," and takes a book,
written thousands of years ago, by one ethnic group who declare themselves God's
chosen people, when there was no science, nor method for experimentation, and
declares that book is the one and only truth in the world, including scientific
truths? I worry about the children of such a person who are most likely
being brainwashed that the Earth is only a few thousand years old, that the
formation of geophysical structures such as the Grand Canyon can be explained by
one water logged event that geologists are STILL trying to pin point, that
modern human beings existed alongside dinosaurs only found in the Triassic, Jurassic
and Cretaceous 65 + million years ago, and that they should reject anything that
modern science teaches regarding geology and the billions of years that existed
on this planet before they came around. There is one other little thing
that isn't related to the science part, but still pisses me off, and that being,
God's slaying of the first born of Egypt is perfectly acceptable and OK because
it was His way of ensuring the proliferation of the Jewish people. I find
that a bit sickening, and frankly a bit dangerous. Christian fundamentalism at its core is
frightening. Followers reject many forms of logic with regard to the world
we live in, and reject known established facts with regard to this planet and
universe. In essence, they are living in a fantasy world and regurgitate
for the rest of us anything that is shoved down their throats even if it is
completely and utterly false. I have known a few people over the years who
were once "normal", average people, with a grip on societal norms, who
for the most part seemed like logical people interested in their educations, and
learning about the world around them, but maybe had a few issues being what I
deemed "obsessive or addictive personalities." By this I mean
they engaged in obsessive or addictive behavior whether it was drinking, taking
recreational drugs, anorexia, bulimia, obsession over the loss one relationship
for years after that relationship ended.... each of the individuals
exemplified eventually became a born again fundamentalist Christian keeping in
line with their obsessive, addictive behavior. Instead of being addicted
to drink, drugs, or a former love, or obsessing about food, weight, or lost
love, their focus has shifted and they have become addicted to and obsess about
God, and more specifically Christ and the literal interpretation of the
Bible. And most are not content to sit quietly in a corner and peacefully
revel in their new found salvation. No, they MUST inform the world that
the rest of us are WRONG, and THEY are right because it says so in the
Bible. And sheer and utter arrogance and lack of humility that is
exhibited by many is appalling to me. It makes me wonder where the
messages of humility, and acceptance and love for your fellow man got lost in
translation. But
this entry is mainly about the rejection of science, and not the other issues
regarding fundamentalism. I am a firm believer in the scientific method,
because its just that. A method, a system, a series of checks and balances
to confirm and reconfirm results. Not all hypotheses are proven
true. That's why data is collected, and tested, and retested, to ensure
that results are as accurate as possible. I find it interesting that
fundamentalists cannot quote sources to cite "facts" about their form
of science, but merely just make statements as if they are fact. Science
is not an exact science, but the fact that evidence is out there and can be
tested and we have methods for doing such only leads me to believe that this
great big living breathing puzzle we are all engaged in, has solutions, and keys
to be figured out, that nothing is absolute, nor black and white as the
fundamentalists would have most of us believing, because the whole scheme of
things is way too complex, complicated, symbiotic, and intertwined. That
meaning, God Himself is far too complicated for us to understand and wrap our
brains at this stage of our existence, and so are all of His creations.
Created in His image, are we not meant to be curious and use the brains and
brain capacity He gave us to figure things out on our own? I think
so. Where is the purpose in everything being explained in one neat and
tidy package? Fundamentalists don't give us as human beings and God's
ultimate living creation much credit in the brains department if they think
existence can be summed up by the folk tales in the Bible. And therein
lies the danger. They would deny our God given free will, and have us all
be sheep, blindly to follow whatever brainwashing rhetoric they would spew in
order to have control over us and our minds. Song

Trivia du Jour: Hmmm, reading a little bit about the useless waste of
human flesh known as Fred Phelps, it seems he is just out and out a
criminal. Not only do I think he is guilty of child abuse for making his 6
year old grandchildren participate in his orgies of hate by holding up signs
saying "God Hates Fags", but is looks as though he is a wife beater,
AND a child beater. Two of his children are disabled as a result of the
beatings inflicted by him in drunken rages. Preggo
